REVIEW : TINA – DURBAN 2017/18

Reviewer: Ellen Esther

Wow ! What a night !!!

Caroline Borole literally rocked Sibaya’s iZulu theatre in last night’s opening performance, and brought a playful Durban audience to their feet, with her live renditions of favourite Tina songs. Packed with energy and  enthusiasm Caroline Borole practically sizzled onstage Clearly evident to all who attended last night, her study of the legend Ms Tina Turner showed in her gymnastic gyrations, facial expressions right down to physical mannerisms and dance moves.

The professional South African singer and actress was handpicked by Showtime Australia director, John Van Grinsven, and its clear to see why. Carolines’ voice is a wonder and one could easily just close their eyes and be transported down memory lane, just listening to her sing. Perhaps what was most startling and enjoyable was her ability to capture Tina’s vocal sound, grunts, growls and all.

Supported by 2 equally energetic back-up singers, and a music crew of brass, guitars, drums and keyboard the show thrilled theatre-goers last night. Dazzling light and video-technology took spectators into a  veritable treasure-chest of memories, as our singing super-star belted out classics like Whats Love Got to Do with it, Jumping Jack Flash and River Deep Mountain High.

This utterly enthralled audience was forced to reach into their own memory-banks to join in  sing-along to the more mellow tunes of Lets Stay Together and I Don’t Wanna Lose You. Not to mention, lose their seats every time the beat called for it.

Each set was punctuated by very swift wardrobe changes, showcasing glittering and sexy dresses, that Tina is famous for. Caroline certainly pulled them off beautifully and the whole package of dress, dance and song is a must-see this festive season.

In short, the show is outstanding. Ms Boroles’ energy, voice and own sparkling quality brings the magic of Tina Turner alive and this international show should be high on your list of things to do this summer in Durban. I personally, could easily watch this show a few more times !

Don’t miss this spectacular tribute (which is making its international debut) honoring one of the best female rock legends of our era – Tina Turner.
